Sennheiser PXC 550 Review: The Main Attributes

The Sennheiser Bluetooth Wireless Headphone comes in black with silver accents. The pair has a modern, minimalistic appearance, with over-ear cups and a soft headband made of leather.

The primary features of the PXC550 are:

  • Sennheiser NoiseGard
  • Superior Battery Life
  • Personalize Sound via CapTune

Overview of the PXC 550

The headphones use Bluetooth 4.2 and have a triple microphone system for making and taking phone calls. They include NoiseGard adaptive noise cancellation and selective sound modes for better audio. The pair is designed for comfort and is collapsible for ease of travel. The PXC 550 Wireless has a 30-hour battery life before it needs recharging.

The headphones come with a rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery. A carrying case, cable with remote, USB cable, and IFE adapters come in the same box.

Unique Qualities of the PXC 550 Best Bluetooth Headphone

The headphones use an intuitive touch control system with voice prompts to perform actions such as playing a song, skipping a track, adjusting the volume, or stopping the music altogether. Just swipe the ear cups with your finger to try it for yourself. This design is convenient, cutting-edge, and one that is typically not included in cheaper Bluetooth headphones like the Photive BTH3.

Another innovative feature of the PXC 550 Wireless is CapTune, which is a player app specially made to accompany these Sennheiser headphones. Using the app, you can easily adjust sound performance and control other aspects of the music you stream to the headphones. CapTune is free and available in Android and iOS versions.

Sennheiser PXC 550 Review: Assessing the Pros & Cons

These wireless Bluetooth headphones have qualities that we like and others that we could do without. Let’s start with the positives.

Pros

There are a lot of strengths with the PCX 550. For example, the NoiseGard Adaptive Noise Cancelling technology suppresses noises outside of the headphones so that you can get the best listening experience possible. This benefit is great when you are in a noisy office or traveling by plane, bus, or train.

When it comes to sound quality, Sennheiser delivers sound that is both clear and dynamic, whether you are listening to music or movies. You can also customize the sound to the specific audio by using its sound modes. Also, when you connect your headphones to a PC or Mac via USB, you’ll notice that the music fidelity improves on music and calls.

The battery life deserves mention too. It is exceptionally long at 30 hours. The rechargeable battery in the PCX 550 will even outlast the BackBeat PRO+ that can go 24 hours on a single charge. When you do run low on battery, simply switch to passive listening mode using the included cable, and you won’t use any battery.

Regarding comfort, we rate the Sennheiser PXC 550 over-ear headphones high for this attribute. The headband is padded and the ear cups rotate for a good fit that won’t leave you with a headache. The headset conveniently folds up and fits into the included carry case too, so it can go with you on trips without taking up a lot of luggage space, unlike the B&O PLAY H8.

Cons

Even the best Bluetooth headphone on the market has some flaws. While we marveled at the headphone’s advanced control system earlier in our Sennheiser PXC 550 review, we recognize that it does have a few kinks to work out. For example, users may power on and off the headphones using the controls in the swiveling ear cups without meaning to do so.

Also, Bluetooth digitally processes sound simply by the nature of what it is, which means that the sound users get with the PXC 550 likely won’t satisfy purists. Another potential downside is the price, which won’t fit everyone’s budget. When writing these lines, the price is about the same as Sony’s MDR-1000X.

Who is the Average PXC 550 User?

Sennheiser markets their wireless Bluetooth headphones as being ideal for the business traveler. The pair helps you stay in the loop, personally and professionally, by making it easy to take and receive calls. With the headphone’s triple microphone array, speech delivery is quite clear. This means that you won’t likely miss hearing a word during a conversation and the listener on the other end can hear your message loud and clear.

The noise-cancelling technology will appeal to people who want to block out ambient noises when they’re in busy environments. This feature can help them better focus on their work without distractions or improve their listening experiences.

The typical user will also be someone who wants a comfy, lightweight headphone. At just 7.8 ounces, this Sennheiser pair is lighter than the V-MODA Crossfade, which weighs 10.4 ounces.

Concluding the Sennheiser PXC 550 Review

The PXC 550 model is not the cheapest wireless headphone around, but we still consider it to be one of the best Bluetooth headphones because of its range of features and great sound quality. The wireless headphones effectively cancel noise and operate well as a headset for hands-free calling using Bluetooth 4.2.

Furthermore, the Sennheiser PXC 500 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones are comfy and lightweight so that they can be worn for long periods of time. They even collapse to fit easily into luggage. Ultimately, these headphones are a great choice for the business traveler.
